You don’t know what true panic is until you’ve gone through all your pockets, bags, jackets, and every last corner of your house, and your iPhone is still nowhere to be found. As your anxiety sets in, you start trying to remember when you used your phone the last time, where you last saw it, what you did in the moments after.

Though retracing your steps could help you get to your phone, it’s no guarantee. The good news is that there are much better things you could do.

Have a look at how to find the last location of your iPhone before it’s too late.

Part 1. Reasons Why You Should Know How to Find the Last Location of Your iPhone

You might be the most responsible person in the world who’s never misplaced their phone in their life. That doesn’t mean you should expect never to encounter this problem down the line.

Accidents and mistakes happen. Your phone could drop out of your pocket while you’re in a crowded space, not noticing until much later. One of your housemates could move it from its regular place. Someone on the street might even try and steal it.

If you don’t set proper precautions before a scenario like one of these occurs, it will be much more difficult for you to locate your device.

Therefore, you shouldn’t wait until something has happened to start scouring the web for “how to find the last location of my iPhone.” You should come prepared.

Part 2. Set a Passcode on Your iPhone

passcode on iphone

The first and most important thing you should do when you get a new iPhone is set a passcode on it. Primarily, it gives you an added layer of privacy, preventing unwanted observers from snooping through your phone. Secondly, it prevents anyone from accessing your sensitive data in case your phone gets lost or stolen.

To set up your passcode, all you’ll have to do is:

  1. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode(for iPhone X and newer) or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode/Settings > Passcode (for older iPhones);
  2. Tap on the Turn Passcode Onbutton;

turn passcode on

  1. Input your 6-digit passcode;
    1. Alternatively, go to Passcode Optionsto use a 4-digit passcode or custom numeric/alphanumeric code;
  2. Input your chosen passcode once again to confirm it.

You should also set up TouchID or FaceID for improved protection if these options are available on your device.

While setting up passcodes won’t protect your phone from theft or help you locate it once it’s lost, it will give you some peace of mind knowing that your data is safe.

Part 3. Enable the Find My App

As an Apple enthusiast, you don’t need to go Googling “how to find my iPhone’s last location” if you have enabled the Find My app. It’s the app that will help you locate your device with the utmost ease. For many people, it has proven itself to be a lifesaver.

You can use it for your phone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch, relying on it to locate your device wherever it is. However, tracking your devices isn’t the only thing it does. You can also use it to lock your phone or erase its data, ensuring that your privacy is kept secure even if someone breaks into your device.

Of course, to get the most out of the Find My app, you’ll first need to enable it and ensure that you have your location services on at all times. Otherwise, you won’t get much use of it at all.

Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to enable the Find My app:

  1. Go to Settingsand tap on your Name;
  2. Go to Find My,and if you want, turn on Share My Location to show friends/family where you are;
  3. Go to Find My iPhoneand toggle the slider to ON;

toggle the find my iphone slider on

  1. To be able to see your device when it’s offline, toggle the Find My Networkslider ON;
  2. To send your device location to Apple when your battery is low, toggle the Send Last Locationslider ON.

As mentioned, to use the Find My app when your iPhone is lost, you’ll also need to enable your location services. You can do that by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Then, toggle the Location Services slider to its ON position.

Part 4. Find the Location of Your Phone Using Find My

Once you’ve enabled the Find My app, you’ll be able to use your other Apple devices to locate your iPhone if you ever lose it. Here’s how to see the last location of your lost iPhone:

  1. Access the Find Myapp on a different device that uses the same Apple ID as your lost iPhone;
  2. Tap on the Devices icon at the bottom of the screen;

go to devices

  1. Select your lost iPhone;
  2. Tap on Directions.

The Maps app should automatically open and give directions to your lost device.

If your phone is misplaced somewhere in your vicinity but you just can’t find it, you can follow the same steps as mentioned above, but instead of tapping on Directions, tap on Play Sound. Even if you muted your iPhone, it will play a sound and help you locate it faster.

Part 5. Find the Location of Your iPhone Using iCloud

If you don’t have a different Apple device with the same ID, you can also find your phone using iCloud:

  1. Go to comon any device or browser you have access to;
  2. Use your Apple IDto log into your account;

Part 6. Use Google Maps to Find the Last Location of Your iPhone

In case you can’t use another connected device or iCloud, there’s a chance that you could use Google Maps to find your lost phone. However, that will only be possible if you’ve previously enabled location services on your iPhone, given Google Maps permission to use your location, and enabled location history.

If you have, you might just be in luck and can follow these steps to find your lost phone:

  1. Use any web browser to sign in to your Google account;
  2. Go to Google Maps Timeline;
  3. Click on Today;

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the timeline to see your last reported location.

You can use this information to determine your phone’s location and then find the fastest route to get there.

Part 7. Enable the Notify When Found Feature

If your iPhone isn’t online, thus preventing you from seeing it on your maps in iCloud, you could use the “Notify When Found” feature. With this feature, you’ll get an email if someone finds your phone and turns it on.

  1. Go to comand sign in using your Apple ID;
  2. Go to All Devicesand select your lost phone;
  3. If your phone is offline, click the box next to Notify Me When Found.

Now, all you can do is sit and wait. Hopefully, someone will see your iPhone and turn it on, so you’ll soon know where it’s located.

Part 8. Enable Lost Mode

Finally, you could try enabling the “lost mode” via iCloud in an attempt to find your phone. The lost mode locks your phone, disables Apple Pay, among other services, and displays a phone number that someone who comes across your phone could use to reach you.

To enable lost mode, follow these steps:

  1. Go to comand sign in using your Apple ID;
  2. Go to All Devicesand select your lost phone;
  3. Click Mark iPhone as Lost;
  4. Follow on-screen instructions.
